With the presentation of ideas that are transforming business and society as a backdrop, Entel Summit 2018 featured a presentation by Chip Conley, strategic advisor at Airbnb, who shared keys on how to carry out a startup, using the right tools and with a deep knowledge of the customers.
“Ten years ago we did not exist, today we are the leading hotel company in the world, how did we achieve this? With technology, collaboration and a mobilizing purpose,” said the executive in front of more than 1,700 people at Espacio Riesco.
Conley -- who has been with Airbnb for nearly six years - said that the key for today’s entrepreneurs is to learn to “surf” in business, assuring that a good surfer is capable of seeing all the waves in front of him and defining which one is provided for success, “the same thing entrepreneurs do”.
He also revealed the importance of having a disruptive mind, that is, a mentality open to new perspectives, diversity and experimentation. For him,“technology and globalization is what has facilitated the exponential growth of business” But he emphasized that the key factor is the ability to see unmet needs, respond to them with innovative solutions and generate an emotional and collaborative connection with customers.
Chip Conley, who at the age of 26 bought a motel in San Francisco, United States, and in 20 years turned it into the second largest boutique hotel chain in that country, pointed out that a key exercise for every business is to discover what its real essence and purpose is. “They must rethink their differentiating element,” he said. In the case of Airbnb, he commented that “it is not only a business of sharing your home with travelers, but of allowing people to feel that they belong anywhere. That’s what drives us at Airbnb,” he said.
Entel Talks: “Innovation and Technology with Social Impact”
Unlike other years, Entel Summit 2018 not only featured a keynote speaker, but also, for the first time, Entel Talks, under the slogan “Innovation and Technology with Social Impact.” Two presentations addressed the impact of technology in areas as relevant to society as education and health.
One of the people in charge of bringing Entel Talks to life was Sugata Mitra, creator of the School in the Cloud. This project, which earned him the TED Prize in 2013, seeks to bring the Internet and technology to schoolchildren around the world, as it postulates that children can learn intuitively and collaboratively in front of a computer. “The important thing is that children are together, have internet and do it in a space that is public and safe,” he said.
Regarding the possibility of bringing the School in the Cloud to Chile, Sugata Mitra explained that “it is certainly feasible”, and even revealed that he would meet yesterday with the Minister of Education, Gerardo Varela, to present his project and find a way to implement it in the country.
Nadine Hachach-Haram was the second speaker, who, thanks to her experience as a surgeon, created the augmented reality platform Proximie, which helps doctors from all over the world to participate remotely in operations or medical consultations. In this regard, he pointed out that technology is very important today and that this platform can also be applied to other areas of medicine. But he emphasized that the ultimate goal of these disruptive solutions is to improve patient care and generate changes in society.
Similarly to the creator of the School in the Cloud, Nadine Hachach-Haram stated that, without a doubt, Proximie could be implemented in Chile. “The reason why we created Proximie is because we wanted to solve the global problems surrounding healthcare, we wanted to democratize it,”, she said.
For his part, Entel’s Vice-President of Corporate Markets, Julián San Martín, pointed out that “the reality faced by companies today means that adapting is no longer enough, which puts the sustainability of the business at risk. A profound transformation is required that implies rethinking how to do business, developing new capabilities and agile and collaborative work cultures and, at the same time, thinking about businesses that are more connected to the customers and the community. This is the focus of the debate that we wanted to promote in this ninth version of the Entel Summit”.
San Martín also announced the creation of Entel Ocean, a new unit of the company that will develop advanced digital solutions, using tools such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence and cloud, together with an ecosystem of partners and working under agile models.
