Chile was the fourth country in Latin America most affected by cyber-attacks in 2023, beaten only by Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, according to the latest Entel Digital Cybersecurity Report.
As stated in the report, whose data was collected by Entel Digital's Cyber Intelligence Center (CCI), where specialists constantly monitor cyber-attacks and incidents in Chile, Latin America and the world, last year was marked by an increase in cyber-attacks on different industries, governments and institutions.
In this fourth edition, Brazil was the country with most of these cybercrimes, registering 63 incidents of Ransomware, followed by Mexico and Argentina (44 and 23, respectively). Our country climbed from seventh to fourth place in one year, with 21 incidents and an average of 1.9 per month. This is almost twice as many as in 2021 and 3 times more than in 2022, when there were only 7 incidents recorded.
For the Ransomware sample, Entel Digital's research teams analyzed more than 440 cases, from 19 Latin American countries. Of these, 42 were from Chile (from 16 different industries). On the other hand, for the Data Leak sample, a total of 849 cases from all Latin America were analyzed. Supported by the intelligence cycle, used in organizations such as North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Entel Digital's CCI information was carried out through the analysis of various sources, including internal and external research, as well as the monitoring of forums, blogs and portals of the Deep and Dark Web.
“This increase in cyber-attacks is a direct consequence of the growing use of technology, which has transformed the way we interact as a society. Cybercriminals have capitalized on this reality, using technology and communication networks as tools to commit various illicit acts in cyberspace. They have put into practice a series of malicious activities as frauds, identity theft and even more sophisticated cyber attacks, such as the infiltration of computer systems and the execution of Malware in different institutions and companies”, explained the director of the Cyber Intelligence Center (CCI) of Entel Digital, Eduardo Bouillet.
The most representative attacks in 2023 were mainly carried out through the black market, under names such as Ransomware, Malware and Hacking, giving different people -without greater sophistication or knowledge- the ability to cause great damage for their personal benefit.
The researchers also state that, when segregating the data by month, the highest number of cybersecurity incidents in Latin America was recorded in May, and that the occurrence of these incidents is expected to increase steadily this year.
Predictions for 2024
In terms of predictions, the Entel Digital report revealed that it’s expected to see a significant increase in the use of artificial intelligence and automation to detect and respond to cyber threats, as well as the development of more sophisticated and specific security strategies to address threats in IoT devices and hybrid work environments.
Also, an evolution of Ransomware and digital extortion attacks is anticipated, along with a renewed focus on cyber resilience and the use of deception and counterintelligence techniques to combat attackers. These perspectives underscore the importance of staying current in the field of Cybersecurity and Cyber Intelligence, preparing organizations and professionals to meet the challenges of the digital future.
Safety recommendations
Faced with today's complex cybersecurity landscape,“it is essential that organizations adopt a comprehensive approach to protect their digital assets and data, considering this risk as a fundamental part of their business strategy. This involves not only strengthening their own defenses, but also establishing security standards for key partners and suppliers”, said Cyril Delaere, Cybersecurity Services Manager at Entel Digital.
Among the specific actions recommended are access control to systems, staff awareness, strong password policies, information classification, encryption of sensitive data, and constant updating of business software, among others. In addition, the importance of continuous monitoring and preparedness with incident response plans is emphasized, thus forming a solid comprehensive protection system.
