Encouraging electronic recycling practices in the inhabitants of Punta Arenas is the objective of the Recyclápolis Foundation and Entel, which today, as part of the city’s Invernadas, launched the “Electronic Recycling for Chile” campaign.
The purpose of this initiative is to distribute 25 containers, each with a capacity of 360 liters, in various iconic points of the regional capital, such as schools, museums and health centers. The first container will be installed in the front of the Municipality of Punta Arenas, and the rest will be distributed to 24 educational institutions in the city.
“For Entel, the development of people and the environment go hand in hand. Therefore, our responsibility must go beyond our operations, as we are committed to connecting people with a cleaner and better world, so that next generations will have a more sustainable future,” , explained Katherine Martorell, Entel’s Director of Sustainability and Communities.
The containers will be used to collect electronic waste in the following categories: cell phones and accessories (cables, chargers, headphones, etc.), printer ink cartridges and compact discs.
“Our foundation has a collaborative alliance to guarantee the complete, integral and correct recycling process. On average, a container is filled after three months. Then the garbage is recovered and moved to Santiago to dismantle all the cell phones and accessories, to later dispose of them and take them to Europe, where the raw materials of the devices are recycled,” , said Fernando Nilo, founder of the Recyclápolis Foundation.
Thanks to this initiative - carried out with great success in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, Biobío, La Araucanía, Coquimbo and Los Ríos regions - more than 10 tons of electronic waste have already been collected.
“We are very pleased with this public-private partnership with Entel and the Recyclapolis Foundation, since we currently have 30 million cell phones throughout Chile, which become highly polluting waste. Therefore, as a municipality, we are joining in the task of recycling batteries, chargers, compact discs and, obviously, cell phones, which will be collected and sent to the north of the country at no cost to the municipality”, explained the mayor of Punta Arenas, Claudio Radonich.
Fundación Recyclápolis will be in charge of removing the electronic waste collected in the containers and its correct disposal or recycling, as appropriate.
In addition to the Magallanes Region, during 2017 this campaign will be replicated in other regions of the country, with the intention of ending the year with the deployment of electronic recycling containers throughout Chile.
