As part of the “Electronic Recycling for Chile” campaign, Entel and the Recyclápolis Foundation will distribute 60 bins - of 360 liters each - at various points in the region.

The containers will be used for recycling technological waste, such as cell phones, accessories, printer ink containers and compact discs.

Incentivizing electronic recycling practices is what Recyclápolis Foundation and Entel are seeking, which today kicked off the “Reciclaje electrónico para Chile” (in English “Electronic Recycling for Chile”) campaign in Coquimbo.

The purpose of this project is to encourage electronic recycling practices through the deployment of 60 containers of 360 liters capacity each, which will be distributed at various points such as schools, family health centers and iconic places in the Coquimbo Region.

“For Entel, the development of people and the environment go hand in hand. Therefore, our responsibility must go beyond our operations, as we are committed to connecting people with a cleaner and better world, so that the next generations will have a more sustainable future”, explained Manuel Araya, Entel’s Manager of Regulation and Corporate Affairs.

The containers that will be handed out in this campaign will be used to collect electronic waste corresponding to the following categories: cell phones and accessories (cables, chargers, headphones, etc.), ink containers for printers and compact discs.

“We are proud that the fifth stage of the Electronic Recycling for Chile program has been carried out in our municipality of Coquimbo, with the installation of 60 electronic recycling containers in educational establishments, health centers and public places in the city. We are convinced that this will be a contribution and will reinforce the environmental education that is currently being developed in the municipality, also providing a solution to the problem of electronic recycling of our population”, said Marcelo Pereira, mayor of Coquimbo..

Fernando Nilo, founder of the Recyclápolis Foundation, commented: “For the Recyclápolis Foundation it is an honor to implement the Electronic Recycling for Chile campaign for the first time in the northern part of the country. We have decided to start in Coquimbo, due to the importance of the city in the region”.

Thanks to this initiative, which has been carried out with great success in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso, Biobío and Araucanía regions, more than 10 tons of electronic waste have been collected. Of these, 7.8 tons correspond to batteries, two to cartridges and CDs, and the rest to cell phones and accessories.

In addition to Coquimbo, during 2017 this campaign will be replicated in the regions of O’Higgins, Los Ríos, Aysén and Magallanes, with the intention of ending the year with the deployment of these containers throughout the national territory.

Recyclápolis will be in charge of removing the electronic waste collected in the containers and its proper disposal or recycling, as appropriate.
