Incentivizing electronic recycling practices is what Recyclápolis Foundation and Entel are looking for, which today kicked off the ““Reciclando celulares para Chile” (in English “Recycling cell phones for Chile”) campaign in Temuco.
The purpose of this project is to encourage electronic recycling practices through the deployment of a hundred containers of 360 liters each, which will be distributed at various points such as schools, family health centers and iconic places in the Araucanía Region.
“Entel is committed to the people and the environment of our country, as we understand that our responsibility must go even beyond our operations. Our mission is more than technological connectivity, it is connectivity between people and, of course, contributing to generate a cleaner and better world, so that the next generations have a more sustainable future”, explained Felipe Simonsohn, Entel’s Director of Public Affairs.
The containers that will be handed out in this campaign will be used to collect electronic waste corresponding to the following categories: cell phones and accessories (cables, chargers, headphones, etc.), ink containers for printers and compact discs.
“It fills me with pride and satisfaction that the second stage of the program has begun in the municipality of Temuco, with the distribution of electronic recycling containers in educational establishments and public places in the city. We are convinced that this program will reinforce the environmental education currently being carried out in the municipality, specifically helping to solve the problem of electronic recycling in our population”, said Miguel Ángel Becker, Mayor of Temuco.
Fernando Nilo, founder of the Recyclápolis Foundation, commented: “The Recyclápolis Foundation is proud to implement the fourth stage of the “Recycling cell phones for Chile” program in the Araucanía Region, donating new electronic recycling infrastructure in Temuco. This will make it possible for the city’s community to incorporate cell phone recycling as a common practice and habit in their daily activities”.
Thanks to this initiative, which has been carried out with great success in the Metropolitan, Valparaíso and Biobío regions, more than 10 tons of electronic waste have been collected. Of these, 7.8 tons correspond to batteries, two to cartridges and CDs, and the rest to cell phones and accessories.
In addition to La Araucanía, during 2017 this campaign will be replicated in other regions of the country, with the intention of ending the year with the deployment of these containers throughout the country.
Recyclápolis will be in charge of removing the electronic waste collected in the containers and its proper disposal or recycling, as appropriate.
