Digital Divide:

To facilitate distance education, the initiative of Kyklos and the Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje, jointly with Entel, added new points in regions and expanded the home collection of teams to continue collecting unused computers, tablets and cell phones, which will be recovered and donated to students in vulnerable situations.

The refurbished devices in the first stage will be received by schools and camps.

This week began the second stage of the “Reutiliza” campaign ("Reuse" in English), which seeks to contribute to the circular economy and reduce the digital divide. The Kyklos initiative, in collaboration with the technology and telecommunications company Entel and the Centro Inclusivo de Reciclaje (CiR, by its Spanish acronym), aims to collect unused electronic devices nationwide that will be refurbished and donated to students in vulnerable situations.

Unlike the previous campaign, carried out in 2020, and with the aim of continuing to decentralize the initiative, this time there are donation boxes available throughout the country, where people can leave their devices, as long as sanitary measures allow it.

Likewise, the number of communes in the Metropolitan Region will be increased from 15 to 33, where people will be able to request the home collection of unused electronic devices, free of charge. Through the websiteentel.cl/reutiliza, those who have notebooks, computers, tablets and smartphones can register to donate and request their removal in any of the phases of the Step by Step Plan.

CiR and Ingeniería Sin Fronteras will be in charge of repairing and refurbishing the devices so that they can be donated and used by students. The devices that cannot be recovered will be recycled for proper disposal, preventing them from polluting the planet.

“This campaign is a good example of how social and environmental causes can be articulated in parallel. On the one hand, we hope to have a direct impact on thousands of students who today need technological resources to be able to continue with their online classes and, on the other hand, we want to contribute to the care of the environment by preventing unused electronic devices from ending up in landfills or dumps. This is something that moves us together with Entel", says the Executive Director of Kyklos, Hernán Hochschild.

[

This second stage is a continuation of the campaign launched in October last year, thanks to which 50 devices will be donated in a first delivery to the Patricio Mekis School in Maipú (21 notebooks, 5 tablets and 24 computers) and 52 more in a second donation. “This school provided for the lack of electronic devices to continue with their studies, and has a vulnerability index of 91.1%, so the donation is urgent for them”, added Jimena del Valle.

Additionally, 27 cell phones and 25 laptops will be delivered to the UC School of Government, which will be in charge of donating them directly to children and young people in camps, and is also in charge of the process of measuring the real impact that these devices will have on about 150 children. This will be done through Techo tutors, who will also reinforce academic subjects with the students.

How to do it?

  1. Identify cell phones, computers and tablets in disuse that you want to donate.
  2. Register on the website entel.cl/reutiliza, and in the regions, go to the containers set up in each city.
  3. Kyklos y Entel retirarán -sin costo- los aparatos de las personas inscritas, de acuerdo a coordinación previa.
  4. The electronic material will be taken to the CiR for refurbishment by Ingeniería Sin Fronteras volunteers or recycling in case it cannot be repaired.
  5. The devices will then be donated to students who do not have access to technology to connect to online classes.
