The initiative will benefit more than 70 thousand households in the region:

Currently 44% of households in the country do not have access to a fixed internet connection, there are still 200 communes with less than 20% penetration. In Calama the gap is 41.72%.

With the objective of facilitating internet access to homes located in areas with low penetration or that do not have other alternatives in terms of supply or quality, Entel continues to advance in the deployment of its fixed wireless broadband service for the home, together with a digital literacy campaign, work in conjunction with the Municipality of Calama.

Thus, yesterday, in the San Sebastián village, the Fixed Wireless Internet service was launched, which will allow the inhabitants of that area to have home internet contracting options.

“This Wireless Home Internet service that Entel will provide in our area, will be a great help, especially to fulfill one of our dreams, which is to build a children’s library for the children of the population and the big problem we had, was where we would get internet, so that our young people could do their work, search for information, etc... In short, the internet is relevant for the development of our lives and especially for the intellectual development of our children and youth. It is important to thank the efforts of our mayor, who finally helped Entel to benefit our population”. Said Magdalena Vega, president of the Neighborhood Council of the San Sebastián de Calama neighborhood.

The project involves a total investment of more than US$ 250 million and will allow it to reach a universe of almost three million homes throughout the country by 2021, with a high-speed connection, and to benefit sectors that today cannot enjoy the benefits of technology.

Entel’s Director of Public Affairs and Institutional Relations, Claudio Anabalón, emphasized that “the deployment of our Fixed Wireless Broadband service will allow us to serve thousands of homes that today have difficulties in accessing this technology and democratize the offer in this area”.

Likewise, the mayor of the commune, Daniel Agusto said that “This is a very important milestone, especially in terms of access to technology and internet, which means that the company has made an effort to bring coverage to the San Sebastian area, so that neighbors can access high-speed wireless internet services in their homes. This deployment by Entel is in line with the company’s eagerness to contribute to the work being done by the government to reduce the digital divide, and it should be noted that it is being carried out with totally new wireless technologies currently used in Chile and Australia”.

To access the home internet service, the main requirement is to verify that the home has feasibility of access to the network that is currently being deployed. However, as it is a totally wireless alternative, it is not necessary to carry out the wiring of the fixed internet services or the visit of technicians for its implementation, it is only required to have an electrical connection and the user can make the installation directly.
