Nearly 100 students competed in this event organized by the telecommunications company and Universidad Católica, with the support of Twitter, to find digital solutions to urban problems, based on open databases.

After more than 24 hours of work, an application to optimize reactions to natural emergencies, was the winner of the second version of the Entel Big Data Marathon, which was organized by the telecommunications company, in joint collaboration with Universidad Católica through its SCL laboratory, the School of Communications and the schools of Engineering and Design, with the support of Twitter.

Nearly 100 students from different universities, professional institutes and technical training centers participated in the event. They were divided into 19 teams and developed for more than 24 continuous hours -between Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14-, different applications with the objective of finding a digital solution to urban problems, based on open databases.

The meeting was attended by leading national and international experts, highlighting the Chilean physicist based in Chicago Cristián Huepe, who presented his theory of post-truth, mathematically demonstrating how information flows through social networks. In addition, the founder of Kappo, Iván Páez, showed the experience achieved by this application that promotes the use of bicycles.

These specialists, as well as other experts in the field, supported the competitors with different talks that provided them with tools in the digital field, entrepreneurship, innovation and teamwork, among other aspects, in order to inspire students with their proposals.

Thus, on Thursday, six finalist projects were selected, who had to present their proposals before a jury of experts, made up of representatives of Entel, the company Analitic, Start-Up Chile and Universidad Católica, at the UC Anacleto Angelini Innovation Center, located at the San Joaquín Campus of the university.

The dean of the Faculty of Communications at the Catholic University, Eduardo Arriagada, spoke with the participants and said: “the purpose of activities like these is to encourage creativity in young people to allow them to contribute to the world of technological and digital solutions that are increasingly necessary in our country”.

Meanwhile, the manager of Analytics and Special Projects at Entel, Tristán Riquelme, said: “the transforming role, as well as elements such as innovation and technology, are part of our DNA at Entel. We have seen very good projects in this marathon, where young people really sought solutions to problems of society through the management of Big Data and advanced analytics, which are the tools of the future, both in business and in the generation of public policies at the service of the community. Through this event, we also sought to attract talent, opening a space for contact and dialogue with our company, something we believe has been more than achieved with the results of the winning projects.”

Winning projects

First place, with a prize of $ 1,000,000, went to the FireRanger team, which developed a project that seeks to optimize emergency response by means of real-time tracking of satellite images, which would allow it to deal more efficiently with catastrophes such as the forest fires that occurred at the beginning of the year in central-southern Chile.

The second place, with a prize of $ 500,000, went to the Snitch team, which designed a system to monitor the effectiveness of public transportation based on monitoring bus stops through user interactions.

Meanwhile, the ProtoApp team received an honorable mention for the design of a prototype of a fluid response system for emergencies, based on interactions in social networks such as Twitter.
