• Musíglota was the winner of the Entel ICT category, for which 26 projects competed in this edition.

• The winners of all categories of the Avonni National Innovation Award 2015 were also announced last night.

Musíglota was chosen as the winner of the Avonni TIC Entel Award, a category that highlights the best technological innovations that contribute to the social and economic progress of the country. The award ceremony was attended by the Minister of Economy, Luis Felipe Céspedes, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Paulina Saball, and the Minister of Social Development, Marcos Barraza, among others.

Musíglota was created by three music-loving Chilean entrepreneurs who saw the need to learn English in an easier way, using a tool that was accessible to all Chileans. This is how this application was born, which makes it possible to learn English through the music contained in any smartphone.

Users can learn English by doing different exercises with their favorite songs from their mobile phone or tablet, earning points for each exercise they complete, allowing them to progress through the different levels of the application.

In its first semester, the software has registered more than 95,000 users, reaching 8 Spanish-speaking countries, including Chile, Peru and Mexico, and was recently highlighted by the OAS.

Ricardo Mansilla, one of the creators of the application, explains that “in the Chilean school system, 4 hours a week are dedicated to English classes and 22 hours a week to music. We realized that by combining the two, we could create an easy learning experience that would be adapted to each student’s preferences, since they would learn with the music they like, which would engage them more”.

The project, declared one of the 30 most promising innovations in Latin America by Forbes magazine, has been running since May in around 100 schools, both public and private. The application is being used according to the parameters and objectives set by the Ministry of Education, and its use has already shown positive results.

Eighty per cent of the exercises consist of multiple-choice questions, while 20 per cent focus on developmental issues.

Entel’s Innovation Manager, Carlos Rodríguez, said:“The quality of the projects presented in this ninth edition of the Avonni Awards was high. That is why we are proud to see the growth of the winners of previous editions of the Avonni in the Entel ICT category, to observe the maturity in this edition and the impact that these initiatives can achieve”.

Livn, an intelligent irrigation system, and Yoy Simulators, simulators that use virtual reality to make it easier to operate machinery, were the finalists competing for first place with Musíglota.

[

Isidora Undurraga, executive director of the Avonni Awards, explained the added value of the winners, who provided disruptive solutions to current problems: “Innovation is an attitude, and this is exactly the attitude we want for today’s Chile. Our winners show us every day that it takes an enormous amount of energy to develop, implement and realize good ideas. Contrary to popular belief, the innovator does not search for solutions in isolation, but connects with his or her environment, identifies problems and seeks constructive solutions, resulting in a better quality of life for people and greater productivity for the country. This is the attitude that will make possible the great change we need for Chile.”

In these nine years of its existence, the Avonni National Innovation Award has recognized some 115 initiatives, in addition to 500 other projects that have been finalists. In 2015, and for the second year in a row, Avonni also recognized the most innovative projects in the regions: Avonni Patagonia, Avonni Campomar and Avonni el Sol.
