In May of this year, the initiative that connected the cities of New York and Dublin through a portal that allowed people from different parts of the world to interact became known. This project, which had only been used in Europe and North America, reached Latin America for the first time, linking three Chilean cities.
For three days, the Conectando Chile Portal united Iquique, Santiago and Valdivia through the infinite possibilities offered by technology. It was an interactive portal that functioned as a continuous live video call -between cameras located in different parts of the cities-, connecting residents immediately, where viewers could observe and interact with other people, friends or family members who were on the other side of the country, virtually.
The initiative arrived in Chile as part of the 60th anniversary of the technology and telecommunications company Entel, demonstrating the power of technology to bring people together.
“As the name says, connecting Chile has been in our DNA for 60 years. We have worked to offer a robust network that has been changing along with technological development. Our purpose is not technology per se, it is to improve people's lives through technology. This initiative was an invitation to bring the territory closer through connectivity”, said Entel's general manager, Antonio Büchi.
For his part, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, said that “connectivity allows us this type of demonstrations, such as being able to see in real time people from three different cities in the country through a screen. What Entel is showing us today is what many families can already access thanks to the deployment of connectivity that our country is showing today. As Subtel we work for the zero digital divide and through our projects we seek that connectivity reaches the different corners of Chile”.
The technology and telecommunications company invited all residents of Iquique, Santiago and Valdivia to come to the points where the portal was installed, in order to greet their relatives, friends and compatriots who live in one of the other cities that could be seen through Portal Conectando Chile.
The portal was available from August 29 through August 31, between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in iconic spaces in each city:
