Located more than 3,500 kilometers from the mainland, Rapa Nui has had access to telecommunications services since the 1960s, thanks to Entel’s investment and technological innovation. Today, this history reaches a new milestone with the launching of the first antenna with 5G technology on the island.
Entel installed two antennas in the area, corresponding to the second phase of the project committed in the 3.5 GHz 5G spectrum bidding process, with which 5G connectivity is now available from Putre to Puerto Williams, and there are already more than 1.5 million customers using this technology.
“The installation of the first 5G antennas in Rapa Nui fills us with pride, and is the result of Entel’s commitment to deliver connectivity, reaching every corner of the country, to bring the infinite possibilities that technology gives to all Chileans. Rapa Nui has always been among our priorities, and this is another example of our commitment”, said Entel’s general manager, Antonio Büchi.
Notwithstanding the above, Büchi recalled that due to the characteristics of the island, the navigation or network experience is not the same as on the mainland, since the island’s connection to the Internet is via satellite, which although it is an advanced type of satellite technology, its capacity is much lower than fiber optics.
Entel is a relevant actor in Rapa Nui, since it has been responsible for each of the advances in connectivity that have taken place on the island. In 1966, the first single channel was installed to be able to make fixed calls and in 1990, the company installed the first digital satellite link, which allowed the subsequent development of new mobile technologies, such as 2G, 3G and 4G. In 2020, the 4G network capacity was increased, responding to the requirements and challenges brought about by the pandemic in terms of connectivity.
Meanwhile, the progress of Entel’s 5G technology will result in concrete contributions to bridge the digital gap and play an active role in the challenge of achieving an inclusive digitalization with the environment, through the use of technology in daily life and business, with the objective that no one is left out of this evolution.
