Online transactions soar on these dates and it is essential to be informed about the risks to which you are exposed to avoid possible fraud.

We are already counting down to the start of a new CyberDay, one of the most awaited dates by Chileans to get the best deals. However, considering that all purchases are online, the risks of being a victim of cyber-attacks also increase, so the call is not to lower our guard. For this reason, Entel provides a series of recommendations to avoid problems and make purchases safely.

According to figures from the Santiago Chamber of Commerce, in the CyberMonday held in October last year, more than four million transactions were completed, which resulted in purchases of US$399 million; a figure that they hope to match this time. Given the high interest in mass online shopping events, consumers are exposed to fraud through false links or phishing, which occurs when, through an email or message that appears to be important, for example, from a company, personal data or banking information is requested.

“We know that during these dates electronic sales increase substantially and purchases are often made against time, so as not to miss offers that have limited stock, so it is an opportunity to raise awareness regarding the risks that exist when surfing the Internet. In a hyperconnected world, one of the main challenges is that people understand their responsibility in data protection, that we are all aware of what data we are exposing, how and where. Just as people do not walk down the street with their private information in plain sight, neither should they do so on the Internet”, said Fernanda Mattar, Entel’s cybersecurity assistant manager.

For this reason, the expert gave 10 recommendations for making a safe purchase on May 29, 30 and 31. Some of them are easy and may seem obvious (such as not clicking on pop-up ads), but they can make the difference to avoid bad surprises. These are:

  1. Never give out personal or bank information or data before paying. Before that, you should never give your name, ID Number (rut) or passwords or bank card information.

  2. Enter directly to the official websites of the stores, without following third party links.

  3. Always verify the authenticity and security of the site. How to do it? Corroborating that it is the correct link, that it starts with https://. It is important to verify that the letter “S” is present, as it provides for the web address to be encrypted and protected. Another tip is to look for the green padlock symbol in the address bar.

  4. Check the data carefully and think twice before clicking on links.

  6. In case of suspicions of fake e-mails, before opening an e-mail, make sure you know the sender, verify the data and never open links from e-mails if you are not sure that it is from a reliable sender. When in doubt, it is better to report as a malicious or phishing email and do not click on it.

  7. Do not click on advertisements, since there are pop-up windows that may contain malicious links.

  8. Pay attention to the privacy policies of the site and what cookies are used for.

  9. Avoid connecting to public wifi networks, especially when you want to access sites with sensitive information, such as accessing them with your bank details. Not all wifi networks are secure.

  10. Always use secure passwords in cell phones, devices, social networks, applications and in every service where you have to log in. Ideally, include at least 14 characters, letters, numbers and symbols. For example, This3s1S4fEForm4t.!

  11. Always enable multi-factor authentication (2FA) on social networks, apps and on every service where one has to log in.

Bonus Track:

  1. Having an antivirus installed and updated will reduce the number of threats that can affect us and block access to suspicious or unsafe websites and applications.
